Wetland Rehabilitation
Drainage channels were dug through the IPA’s central wetland in the early 1970’s to drain it for pasture. It has been our long held aspiration to repair the damage and reclaim this critically endangered swamp forest.
Wetland Rehabilitation Specialists, Nature Glenelg Trust (NGT), were engaged through a NSW Environment Trust grant to develop a plan and train the rangers to undertake this delicate work, including the construction of “flow-through” structures (pin-weirs and brush packs), “flow-over” structures (log sill weirs) and backfilling of the minor drains.

hOT STUFF, SATISFYING WORK
-
Mapping drainage lines
21 km of artificially constructed drainage lines have been mapped and strategies identified to repair the damage they are causing.

-
The damage worsens
The increasing frequency and severity of storms and flooding events is increasing the rate of erosion.

-
The Future is Bright
We have partnered with NGT, the Mulloon Insitute and Jagun Alliance to provide additional resources and training so the rangers can continue the work into the future.
